Sanjay Manjrekar’s Comment on North Indian Cricketers Stirs Controversy
Manjrekar Faces Backlash for Statement During ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar is once again at the center of controversy after making a divisive comment during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 match between India and New Zealand. Manjrekar, known for his outspoken nature, stirred a storm on social media with a remark about cricketers from North India.
During the 11th over of India’s chase, Manjrekar commented, “Sorry, I don’t pay attention to the players from the North,” a statement that was swiftly met with criticism across social platforms.
This isn’t the first time Manjrekar has courted controversy. In the past, he has made headlines for targeting prominent figures like Sourav Ganguly, Ravindra Jadeja, and Harsha Bhogle. Recently, he also criticized the BCCI for allowing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to skip the Duleep Trophy 2024, stating they should have participated in the tournament to better prepare for upcoming Test matches.
Manjrekar expressed frustration with the BCCI, accusing them of favoritism. “They should have played the tournament, as you can’t go straight into Tests without practice. It would have benefited them greatly. I don’t understand why some players are treated differently,” he said.
Manjrekar, who played 37 Tests and 74 ODIs for India, has become known for his sometimes controversial commentary, often drawing attention for his blunt assessments of players and cricketing decisions. His latest remarks have once again placed him in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
